Currently accepting submissions!

Variate is accepting submissions through December 1, 2024.

We’re excited to read high-quality original works of fiction in any genre. Please familiarize yourself with our submission expectations and the FAQ below prior to submitting. All submissions will receive a response from our editing team.

Components of a Successful Submission

  • Cover Letter

Begin with a cover letter that helps us get to know you in the body of your submission email. Include any academic and publishing credentials, self-publishing or social media experience, awards, relevant professional experiences, etc. Most importantly, tell us who you are and why you love to write.

Include the best contact method(s) to reach you. If we are interested in your story, we will request the full manuscript and expect a response within 48 hours, so be sure to use an email address or phone number where you regularly receive communication.

  • Synopsis and Outline

Provide a high level synopsis of your book (250 words or less). This should be compelling, designed to hook a reader. Include the total word count of your manuscript and any trigger warnings we should be aware of.

Next, include a chapter-level outline. Summarize each chapter in 3-5 sentences. What is the gist of the chapter and how does it tie together? After reading your outline we should have a good understanding of your characters and plot. This is not the place to obfuscate or tease. Instead, create a concise and straightforward summarization that helps us understand your story.

  • Sample Chapters

Attach a word document (.doc) of the first five chapters of your book. Formatting should be standard page size with 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

Be prepared to provide the full manuscript within 48 hours if requested. We are only considering completed manuscripts at this time and authors must be prepared to submit the full manuscript upon request.

Manuscripts must be traditionally written and free from AI artifacts.

Submission FAQs

Will you consider self-published or previously published works?

Yes, and no. We have a strong preference for original, previously unpublished works for this first batch of books. If you choose to submit a previously self-published book be sure to mention that clearly in the cover letter and include details about the size of the initial print run and sales. Previously published books must still follow the submission expectations: do not mail us a hardcopy or send links to an ebook.

Do you provide editing for the manuscript?

Our editors may provide feedback on your manuscript, including small changes required prior to acceptance for publication. That said, we expect to see mature manuscripts that are free from errors. If you feel your manuscript requires developmental editing or a significant amount of copy editing support, it’s probably not quite ready for submission to Variate. Please do not send us unedited first drafts.

Is my book the right length?

We are looking for books that fall within the 60-80,000 word range, but are flexible on length if your story wows us. We will not be able to accept anything over 100,000 words.

I’m writing a series!

We love a good series! Unfortunately, series are not a fit for our model at this time. We’re looking for standalone books that do not require prior knowledge to enjoy and have a satisfying end. We are willing to consider books that tie into a series / universe you have or will publish separately, keeping in mind that the book you submit to Variate must stand on its own. If submitting a story that ties into a larger universe, be sure to clearly mention that in the cover letter and include relevant administrative information about the larger universe (ie., how much has been published and the publication/sales details).

What shouldn’t I submit?

In addition to series, we are not a good fit for: non-fiction, poetry, experimental fiction, historical fiction, biography, or short-story collections. We’ll consider spicy and erotic content where it enhances a story, but that story should still be compelling even if they spice were removed. Be sure to list any content warnings that would apply to your story in the synopsis. We will not be publishing anything hateful, discriminatory, or derogatory to individuals or groups.

Do I need a social media following or marketing plan?

No. We are looking for quality books from quality authors. We don’t expect you to come with a built-in fanbase and social media reach is not part what we consider when evaluating submissions.
